It is undeniable that there are many people who live life on autopilot.  They more or less just go with the flow, as the saying goes, not being mindful of the decisions they make, goals they pursue or how they are really living their life.

Then there are those who set goals and fail to obtain it and for some unknown reason, they can’t figure out what went wrong.

Today, I’m going to share one principle which has been preventing the individual who lives on autopilot and the one who sets goals and repeatedly fail to attain them, from reaching their full potential.  It is a success principle referred to as routine.

To put simply, routine is basically your regular pattern of living.

Every single person has a routine. Even those who appear to be doing nothing at all. Their routine consists of getting very little done and perhaps engaging in unprofitable activities.

Now here is the question that I get asked as a Life Coach. 

How can my routine influence the level of success that I have been getting in my life?

Well, to answer that question I employ a technique in neurolinguistic programming referred to as Modelling.  I’m not asking you to model anyone right now, but to only consider the first half of the process.

Modelling can be described as a two part process in which a person engages in the observation and then replication of the successful behaviours and practices of another.

So, I want to invite you right now to engage in the observation process.

Find someone in your field whom you consider to be an expert or have attained a great level of success.  Or perhaps, someone who expertly possesses the skills that you would like to attain.

Now answer the following questions.

  1. How do they usually speak?
  2. What are some of their beliefs?
  3. What do they do on a daily basis?
  4. What makes them different from other individuals?
  5. What do they do to ensure results?

The answer to these questions will not only reveal their belief system, thought process, behavioural type, but also their daily routine which helps them to attain their high level of success.

Every successful individual, whether in sports, business or otherwise, have a consistent routine.

Take for instance, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been described as a highly productive person.  We can find several articles online, which make reference to his strict routine that helps him to maintain his health and fitness goals.

What about the CEO of the second US Company to join the $1 trillion club (according to Business Insider) – Jeff Bezos? When you study his daily routine, you discover that a large part of his success is due to his effort to maintain a balanced life.  He ensures that he gets enough rest; he has strong family values and beliefs and a great sense of awareness of when he is the most productive during the day.  All these factors combine to produce a routine that nurtures his success habits.

So my dear reader, what does your daily routine look like? Does your routine align with your intended goals? Does your routine permit you to live your full potential?

For example, you may have a goal to lose 10kg in 2 months, but your routine illustrates a more sedentary lifestyle.

If you wish to more closely monitor your routine, then I invite you to make a note of all the activities that you engage in over the next seven days and the time frames.  This includes entertainment time, such as: social media and watching television.

However, I am of the firm belief that in the majority of instances, we can automatically tell if there is something about our routine that needs to change.


The evidence can be found in the results that we have been getting in our life.  We fail to consistently take action or achieve our intended goals.  We may experience increased stress or overwhelm or a general dissatisfaction of where we are in our life.

Hence, if you want to achieve great success or reach your full potential, then I invite you to do the following:

Get a sheet of paper and draw a line in the middle. On one side, write down what your routine looks like now.  On the other side, write down those things that you need to change or eliminate from your daily routine in order to achieve your desired goals.

By so doing, you are taking the first step to master the success principle called routine.
